The Tajogaite Volcano is a monogenetic cinder cone volcano on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. It emerged during the 2021 eruption, which was the longest and most destructive volcanic event in La Palma's recorded history. Below is a detailed overview of its key features, eruption history, and current status:

Key Facts About Tajogaite
Location: West slope of Cumbre Vieja ridge, municipality of El Paso, La Palma 74.

Elevation: 1,120 meters above sea level, with a cone height of ~200 meters 74.

Eruption Duration: 85 days (September 19 – December 13, 2021) 17.

Type: Strombolian eruption with effusive lava flows and explosive phases 14.

Name Origin: Derived from a local area in El Paso, possibly linked to the pre-Hispanic Benahoarites people 74.

Eruption Highlights
Destruction:

Destroyed 1,345 homes, covered 1,219 hectares of land (including farmland), and displaced 7,000 people 43.

Devastated neighborhoods like Todoque and El Paraíso 15.

Created new lava deltas ("fajanas") extending the coastline by 47 hectares 34.

Eruption Phases:

Began with fissure vents and lava fountains (up to 600 m high) 1.

Transitioned to explosive phases with ash plumes (reaching 5,000 m) and pyroclastic flows 14.

Lava flows reached the ocean, triggering toxic gas clouds and forming new land 45.

Unique Features:

Formed lava tubes (up to 200 m long), now colonized by heat-resistant bacteria 74.

Six craters, with the main crater measuring 172 m long and 106 m wide 7[citation:10].

Current Status (2025)
Tourism: Guided hikes (e.g., Llano del Jable route) offer views of the crater and lava fields, but access is restricted due to lingering toxic gases 83.

Recovery: Reconstruction efforts continue, including road repairs and housing for displaced residents 75.

Scientific Interest: Studied for its hybrid eruption style (combining explosive and effusive activity) and lava tube ecosystems 74.

How to Visit
Guided Tours: Book through authorized operators (e.g., La Palma Travel) for hikes near the exclusion zone 38.

Viewpoints:

Mirador de Tajuya: Closest public viewpoint 3.

Puerto de Tazacorte: Best spot to see lava deltas 3.

Safety: Wear sturdy shoes and avoid unstable lava formations 8.

Legacy
Tajogaite symbolizes both destruction and renewal—reshaping La Palma’s landscape while attracting scientific and tourist interest. Its eruption underscored the island’s volcanic hazards but also demonstrated effective evacuation systems
